Nikola's housing journey:
After living in student halls of residence for three of my five years at university, I ventured into my first experience of the private rental market in Edinburgh in 2006. Two short-term, six month rentals later and I began to weigh up the options of continuing to rent or getting on the property ladder.
On the one hand, renting meant that I could afford to live in the beautiful Edinburgh New Town (a town planner’s dream), but it also meant continuing the perpetual packing, moving, and unpacking cycle - always feeling like I was living out of a suitcase without a fixed place I could call my own.
In the end, I bought a lovely spacious, new-build, two bedroom flat with excellent public transport links, a 20 minute walk to work and my own car parking space.
Eight years later and I'm now living with my fiancé in a beautiful Victorian tenement flat with wooden floorboards, high ceilings and the whole city centre on our doorstep. This property needs some work, and it's not quite the New Town, but it's perfect for us so I can't see us moving any time soon.
