Focus on solutions not speculation or scaremongering says HFS

Scottish home building leaders today called on housing commentators to focus on deliverable solutions rather than speculation and scaremongering, particularly with regards home ownership.

Speaking after a Board meeting of representative body Homes for Scotland, the organisation’s Chief Executive Jonathan Fair (right) said:

“Whilst we understand organisations such as Shelter’s objective in trying to drive more housing investment and applaud this spirit, what the people of Scotland need are reasoned, logical arguments backed up by tangible solutions rather than an approach which feeds on pure speculation, fear and anxiety.

“For example, too often of late, Shelter appears to portray home ownership as something to be avoided at all costs, focusing all of its attention solely on calls for more affordable rented housing. This alone will simply not tackle Scotland’s housing crisis – or, for that matter, meet the aspirations of the majority of Scots who want to own their own home.

“Home ownership and the private sector have key roles to play in meeting housing need in general and in delivering the full range of affordable housing options as defined by the Scottish Government.

In the current economic climate, we must work to provide homes for all families and, in particular, deliver entry level homes for first time buyers. Increasing private investment will also ease some of the burden on local authorities and housing associations who see vital social rented stock coming under increased pressure.

“It is therefore time for commentators such as Shelter to broaden their outlook and work with all housing organisations to develop positive and constructive strategies to ensure that the full range of Scotland’s housing needs are met.”
