New housing initiative needs greater Local Authority understanding

Home building industry body Homes for Scotland has submitted its response to the Scottish Government’s discussion paper reflecting on the first phase of the National Housing Trust, one of a number of new initiatives to help make more affordable homes available to meet housing demand.

Following last week’s official launch kick-starting the construction of over 50 new homes in the Borders, Homes for Scotland’s Chief Executive Jonathan Fair (right) said:

"The National Housing Trust is making a significant difference to the companies involved in delivering these much needed new homes for the people of Scotland, enabling them to retain jobs, skills and capacity that might otherwise be under considerable pressure. It is imperative that we continue, quite literally, to build on the success of this first phase.

“Following feedback from member companies, we have therefore suggested to the Scottish Government constructive areas in which the process would benefit from further streamlining and simplification to reflect the risks borne by participating home builders. We have also called for greater engagement with Local Authorities to increase understanding of the initiative in context and drive greater participation in delivering much needed affordable homes.”
