Narrow focus of Shelter and SFHA polarising housing debate

The Scottish Federation of Housing Associations (SFHA) and Shelter are described as giving a “lukewarm response” to the Scottish Government’s decision to incorporate the New Supply Shared Equity Scheme with Developers as part of its Affordable Housing Investment Programme with funding of £5m (“Homes plan gets a cool reception” – The Herald, Friday 21 January).

With recently published research showing the aspirations of Scots towards home ownership increasing by 20% despite the economic backdrop of the last few years, the new scheme will support the country’s vital home building industry while helping those on low to moderate income buy a new shared equity home and, as a consequence, alleviating pressure on housing waiting lists.

Homes for Scotland Chief Executive Jonathan Fair (right) said:

"The fact of the matter is that Scotland desperately needs new homes across all housing market segments. Different policy approaches tackling different needs, together with new models of funding and delivery such as this one, are simply essential if this is to be addressed.

"Shelter and SFHA’s narrowly focused responses serve only to polarise a housing debate which should be open-minded and “tenure blind” rather than pursuing single issue solutions at the expense of other equally important ones."
